Capernwray Hall is an attractive 19th century mansion, set in 175 acres of parkland just south of England's famous Lake District. It was built in the mid-1800's as a private home for the Lord Lieutenant of the county of Lancaster. The Scottish border is 70 miles to the north; to the east lie the Yorkshire Dales, with their beautiful waterfalls and rugged crags. To the south is the ancient City of Lancaster. Manchester with its international airport is a further 60 miles south. Capernwray was bought in 1946 by Major Ian and Mrs Thomas for use as a Christian holiday and conference centre. It was first used as a Bible School in autumn 1947, to meet the demand for good, sound Bible teaching for the many new converts from the holiday conferences. Over the years since then, more and more people have taken advantage of this Bible teaching. Each winter the Hall is full to capacity with 190 students, from sometimes as many as 30 different nations.

Courses Offered

Capernwray Bible School is a non-vocational one-year intensive study in Scripture, covering the majority of Scripture and other related practical and doctrinal subjects, with an extensive outreach programme throughout the course. The minimum age is 18, with no upper limit. We average 200 students per year from some 25-30 nations. Many career and professional lay people, as well as students either before or after university, make up the student body. The faculty is drawn from throughout the United Kingdom. There are school examinations, and a certificate is awarded. Many colleges as well as some universities throughout the world give credit towards a degree course for the work covered.

One academic year of 30 weeks of studies comprised of the Winter and Spring Bible Schools:

  • Winter School: 22 weeks of study from September to March, comprised of two semesters.
  • Spring School: 8 weeks from April to June

Accommodation

This is mainly dormitory style with a limited number of rooms for married couples. Students with families live out in rented accommodation in one of the neighbouring villages.

Outreach

There is opportunity for all students to participate in a variety of outreaches - Bible Studies, Sunday Schools, Youth Clubs, Old People's Visitation, Hospital Visiting, Open Air Work, School Assemblies, Bible Classes -- Christian Unions and missions in local schools are allowed in the State schools of the United Kingdom. Student teams often conduct Sunday Services in churches locally and further afield. There is a 10-day outreach during the second term of Winter School in which all students are involved in working with a church.

Recreation

  • Indoors: indoor heated swimming pool; a sports centre with climbing wall and facilities for ball games, and table tennis room.
  • Outdoors: tennis courts, a volleyball court and a football pitch.
  • Trips: At mid-term, a weekend away to Edinburgh or York is offered. Saturday afternoon trips are organised into the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales, and nearby historic towns. These trips are optional, and therefore allowance needs to be made in your budgeting for the School.

Winter Bible School Timetable

Three lectures each morning and two lectures each evening Monday to Thursday. There are two lectures Saturday mornings. Afternoons are used for personal study, recreation, work duty, outreach and so on. One day per week is assigned as a workday when all students are involved in practical duties in the house and grounds. Students also assist with daily house duties.

Spring Bible School Timetable

Four or five lectures each day Monday to Friday. Saturday mornings are reserved for practical duties.

Grants

A number of Local Authorities will consider giving grants to British students.
