When and how did you become a Christian?:
I became a Christian when I was seven, at a Sunday School camp.

Favourite memory from previous holidays at Capernwray: I have many
memories of times with the children which make me smile!  I love working with children because they are so honest and teach me so much about what Jesus wants me to be like - 'like children'.

Why do you think people enjoy holidays at Capernwray?: It is a great opportunity to meet people of different cultures, backgrounds and ages.
- it is a safe place for families

A song you remember from Sunday School: There Are Hundreds of Sparrows

Favourite worship songs: Amazing Grace (My Chains are Gone), Give Me Jesus, Wonderful God

When and how did you become a Christian?:
When I was about 9… or 18… or 26, I’m not sure! I remember at 9 hearing that Jesus could take me to a good place. At 18 I was baptised after being asked why I wasn’t already. At 26 I knew I didn’t clearly know what I believed, or why – and so gave my faith more thought. I discovered that my God given life was not built on safe circumstances – although my upbringing had been relatively safe and very enjoyable, but on outrageous grace, which I had not realised or appreciated so fully until that point.

Favourite memory from previous holidays at Capernwray:
I was here as a teenager on holiday. I remember one teachings session and lots of other guests, the old pool, late night wide games.

Why do you think people enjoy holidays at Capernwray?:
I think our beautiful location and facilities are very attractive to people. The programme, we try to make as varied and inclusive as possible so that everyone can do as much or as little as they like. Good, consecutive Bible teaching is a key part of each week, many come looking forward to the spiritual food, and seem to go home satisfied! With the best intentions in life it’s still not easy for many to spend time experiencing God – that can be more possible in a different situation from home life.

Because it is a safe place; a place where they can see old friends, make new friends and meet with the Lord Jesus.

Carolyn Keats - Youth Team leader
Carolyn Keats - Director of Outreach, Capernwray Bible School and Youth team leader

Country of Origin: England

Personal Interests and Hobbies:
playing flute and guitar, tea shops, dog walking, creative arts, watching and playing sports, films and theatre.

Most influential book(s) other than the Bible: Elisabeth Elliot 'Through Gates of Splendour'. Biography of James Hudson Taylor, books by Floyd McClung.

Most influential film(s) in your life: The Mission, Cry Freedom, Roots.

A song you remember from Sunday School: I didn't go to Sunday School!

When and how did you become a Christian?: Following a period of personal trauma, I became the prayer target of the Christian Union at school! They prayed, witnessed and invited me to Christian events consistently over two years, and were wonderfully caring and supportive friends. I finally gave up the struggle of living life my way without God and became a Christian at 18 years old through the ministry of an American evangelist who also had the gift of healing. Seeing a blind girl healed in front of my eyes meant that I could no longer deny the power and presence of God. I have been experiencing His power and presence ever since and still find it mind-blowing and humbling that Jesus considered me worth dying for.

Favourite memory from previous holidays at Capernwray: Lots of fun and laughter!

Why do you think people enjoy holidays at Capernwray?: Lots of fun and laughter and the opportunity to hear guest speakers and meeting with God in a relaxed and different environment.

Ian Ellershaw - Youth Team leader and Capernwray Bible School Dean of StudentsIan Ellershaw - Holiday team member

Country of Origin: England

Interests: Sport, farming, walking

Biggest influence on my life: My family

Most influential book(s) other than the Bible:
To be honest, I cannot think of a book that stands out as having a massive impact on my life!

Favourite movie: Again. although I enjoy films, I would not say that there has been one that significantly influenced my life

A song you remember from Sunday School:
Father God I wonder, Be Bold Be Strong

When and how did you become a Christian?:
I accepted the Lord Jesus as my Saviour as a boy of five years old.  I was asking my parents about why we went to church and the other deep theological issues that bother a boy of five!  I can remember praying with my mum.  Since then it has become a journey as the Lord has led me very graciously through different seasons of life

Favourite memory from previous holidays at Capernwray: There are a couple.  One would be the fun that four friends and I had in our room on an International Youth Week.  We laughed a lot as we pulled pranks on each other!  On the same week, we really had an encounter with the Lord Jesus as we as a group of friends, realised that we had been living divided lives. This was an important part of our Christian walks.

Why do you think people enjoy holidays at Capernwray?:  I think that this is a mixture of things - the atmosphere - it is so friendly and warm, it is safe, and it allows people to be themselves.  I believe that there is a good program of activities and things to do but there is no pressure to do these if what is wanted is time to be still and relax.  Then of course there is the teaching from God's Word, which points to Jesus - who challenges, encourages, restores and refreshes.  A week at Capernwray can be very significant!
